Black Lane Mansion Part 1, Leeds

test

Located in Leeds, this customer came to us on the recommendation of their architect and we are delighted with the final results. Working in partnership with highly skilled installers, who project managed this job, we created a beautifully finished house bathroom, attic shower room and downstairs WC.

What made you decide to start this project?

I wanted to create a house bathroom in the lodge that complimented the bedroom and control room which is in a Neo gothic style. In keeping with the traditional Edwardian nature of the property we decided to place the toilet in a separate room so the feature tin bath and gorgeous tiles would really stand out. To keep the flow, we used the tiles for the back wall of the toilet so both rooms seamlessly worked together.

Where did you draw your inspiration from?

Gothic but modern was the concept from the beginning and Morland have achieved this perfectly. I gave a very brief brief and showed Morland around the house and talked through what I wanted to achieve. Two of the main house rooms are dark grey and black Farrow and Ball and also have feature plaster painting. I suggested we do the same in the bathroom. Keep it dark and moody yet still bright and airy. Not easy! I found a tile that would be the colour palette and we worked from there.

What was the most challenging part of the process?

We needed to make sure the stairs to the attic had their own space yet still wanting the bathroom to feel spacious. Park Design came up with a fantastic solution without compromising the space by having the toilet separate which also allows the bathroom to feel like a dedicated chill/relaxation zone rather than where you poo and brush your teeth. In the attic, we were very tight for space and height yet somehow Park Design, Morland and the fitters nailed a shower room that doesn’t feel tight. We created a hanging ceiling with led lights to compliment the bespoke coving that was crafted to suit all the original covings in the lodge (which is a particular feature of interest in the grade listing) We also installed hue spots for colour and classic mirror lights each side of the distressed mirror to keep it old school yet it still feels modern.

What do you love most about your bathroom?

Pretty much everything. The fixtures and fittings are super old school but work like ultra modern designs. The Thomas Crapper loo is wonderful. Solid to sit on and fabulous to look at. Every time I look at the tin bath, I just want to fill it with bubbles and dim the lights. I can’t pin point a specific thing becauseI really do love all aspects of the bathroom and toilet. The distressed mirror, the stunning distressed rose tiles…

Even the toilet roll holder! It’s all fabulous. Quality through and through.

How did you find the process from start to finish?

Morland were brilliant from the start. Suggesting various things for me to look at and pricing it well. I had a vision to base the bathroom around some tiles I found and to keep it gothic yet modern. They listened. They didn’t ever send anything that was unsuitable. This made it so much easier for me! I would have had to spend hours looking for things on the internet but Dan and Charlotte did that for me. Great taste yet keeping it within my budget.

How does the end result make you feel?

Super proud. The family love the bathrooms. My older kids have a brilliant shower now up in the attic that feels spacious in such a small space. Very practical. I have a great loo to myself now that feels like a throne. My little daughter LOVES the tin bath so much that I have difficulty in getting her out of it. When everyone sleeps, I fill that tin bath to the brim and use it as a contemplation zone, dimming the lights and getting a nice smelly candle on then loose myself in steam and bubbles. I couldn’t be happier with the results.
