There were particular features that I knew I absolutely must have such as a free-standing bath and a walk-in wet room. I just needed help in pulling my ideas together to realise my vision.
Riverside House, Ilkley
What made you decide to start this project?
I had no choice! I wanted to move to Ilkley and when I viewed the house, I could see it was in desperate need of modernisation and renovation works from top to bottom. It needed so much work to even be habitable and whilst some people may be put off by such a huge project, all I saw was huge potential. It was an opportunity to be able to really strip everything back and have a blank page to design my dream home.
Where did you draw your inspiration from?
I had very clear ideas on the particular aesthetic I wanted to achieve being dark, moody and modern. Nothing fussy – something you would expect to find in a luxury, boutique hotel. Contemporary and stylish, yet practical. There were particular features that I knew I absolutely must have such as a free-standing bath and a walk-in wet room. I just needed help in pulling my ideas together to realise my vision.
What was the most challenging part of the process?
Stripping everything back to the brickwork meant I was really given total carte-blanche and this isn’t necessarily a good thing! Whilst I knew exactly what I wanted, it’s not as though someone can plug me into a computer and download my thoughts. There is an overwhelming amount of choice and simply Googling “moody, modern bathroom” wasn’t going to really get me the bathroom of my dreams. What’s the quality like? What are the measurements and specifications of each item I wanted? This requires intricate knowledge of products that I simply didn’t possess.
All I had was a vision in my mind of what I wanted the end result to look like. I can remember standing in what would be the bathroom area, stripped back to the bare brick and really trying to visualise the end result – it was impossible! Things like the layout, how the first fix would be set out, where should the waste pipe go? I had the tiniest space downstairs to create a WC with a big impact. Was the space being used to its full potential? This was all lost on me. The renovation works were so extreme that I was living in a caravan on-site for most of the duration of the works. It was miserable! As a business owner, I had to make decisions all day and then come back to a building site. I felt like I had become a subject of Grand Designs and wondering what on
earth I had got myself into!
Luckily, Dan and the team at Morland Bathrooms were on hand to help. Dan’s knowledge and expertise was exceptional.
What do you love most about your bathroom?
Definitely the free-standing bath and the walk-in wet-room. Actually, everything! It’s just perfect.
How did you find the process from start to finish?
As I said, living on a building site, is far from ideal. In fact, it was hellish at times. It could have been much worse if I hadn’t have gone with Dan and Morland Bathrooms. Dan gave me so much support from conceptualising my vision, finding me the exact products I wanted, preparing 3D designs of the end result and even coming on-site during the fit-out. It was simply impeccable service throughout.
How does the end result make you feel?
The bathroom is a room everyone uses daily and it sounds trite but being able to use such a beautiful bathroom really brings me joy every day! I know it’s money well spent with the high quality of the products sourced and supplied by Morland Bathrooms.
